quote: OK so whats the criteria for getting onto the second list?
There's a lot of stuff missing from the 2nd list, huge swathes of low turnout classes. The point was to show what boats you might sail with some chance of some company, so I left off everything that scored below 10. Even 10 is a pretty sad rating, given that there's about 75 days a year you can race - it suggests you'd see one of that particular class on one day per month in the summer, hardly a great turnout. |

| This is rather tedious but, from another perspective, it is surprisng that windsurfers were not included in Mikey's first list, yet they are the largest 'fleet', and hopefully have new members as well? (I was one last year) |

| Simon, you imply that Mike thinks only in terms of dinghys. He does - he's a dinghy sailor. Windsurfers are different and we have to organise ourselves for our own benefit. |

That's why I thought it might be useful to add a few numbers from a windsurfer's perspective to this discussion in the "visitors" area - one of our shop fronts. Now about this weather. Where's it gone ? Looks like it's going to be another squelchy MTB session |

Not strictly true in this case, but not a bad general observation.
In this particular case the windsurfers were left off for purely technical reasons - there are some SQL queries on the database which have some purpose or other, and I used them to generate my list. On closer inspection these queries specifically excluded windsurfers. They might equally well have excluded Y&J or something else, or nothing at all. So it's more of an IT error than anything else this time. |

Not quite sure what SQLs are but this particular forum is supposed to be for (all) new members and visitors - not just dinghy sailors.
That was my point. |

Simon, your suggestion that this particular forum is for all new members is correct, but this particular thread might easily have been aimed just at new dinghy members. Other threads in the new members area relate only to Fireballs, Solos, Miracles etc and nobody has got upset about those.
As it is, I've spent a bit of my time to provide a bit of info that may be of interest to some new members. Having been advised that it was incomplete, I put in some more effort and came up with the missing data. That's about as even-handed as I can get. |

'Scuse my ignorance as a dinghy sailor, but I thought windsurfers have lots of different sails and boards depending on the conditions? So surely Mikey's numbers are never going to apply to windsurfing anyway, and someone would need to do a separate count of the number of windsurfing members (easy) and then what kind of kit they own? As far as I am aware, I've only ever seen 2 boards actually do a club race at Draycote, from what I can see most windsurfers like to hoon on windy days...

Guys, I am not upset, just trying to maintain a balance. A lot of good points have been made, and effort spent is never wasted.

please move this topic out of the new members area! while i am sure new members would be interested in the variety of dinghies and also to know how strong the windsurf fleet is, the rest of the topic is far to depresing and belongs in general discussion.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- quote: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For completeness, I wonder what the windsurf count is ? I can think of about 50 regular sailors, out of a fleet of how many ? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The answer was 154 on the day the data was collated Paul. That's a lot fewer than I was expecting.

'New Members' area nicely sanitised. This equates to an income of ~£54k pa from windsurfers - not bad for a bit of grass/gravel. (I know, plus the rescue service and hot showers...but not the racing paraphernalia etc. described in recent posts)

quote: Mike Deane: That's funny, I could have sworn it was me that posted those 2 items. And I'm fairly sure that some other people posted some stuff too, and we had a little discussion.
Is it no longer acceptable to have a discussion in the 'New Members Discussion' section ? And although I'm flattered that only my stuff was left, it kinda begs the question as to why anyone would want to bother making any sort of post here if it's going to be chopped off or rebadged.
Mike, I have moved the discussion into general discussion, because that is what it is...
